Tuna Fishery
OPAGAC’s fleet uses purse seine as the fishing gear. The first Spanish seiners date to the ’60s
The fishing method uses a net of about 2,000 meters in length and 200 meters in depth which is deployed into the water forming a ring around the tuna school assisted by a boat called “panga”. Once the circle is complete, the lower edge of the net is closed to form a pocket, which is then brought to the side of the vessel where the fish are hauled aboard with the use of a brail.
