In February 2012 OPAGAC/AGAC, in collaboration with ANABAC, signed the Code of Good Practice for tuna purse seine fishery.
This Code reflects
- Best practices for handling and release of bycatch species other than tuna
- Requires the use of 100% non-entangling FADs (NEFs) to reduce to a minimum the interactions with sensitive species like sea turtles, sharks and ray
- The implementation of a FAD management system
The fulfilment of the obligations required by the Code of Good Practice is verified with the use of observers, both physical and electronic, on all OPAGAC/AGAC vessels. Such verification is coordinated by AZTI.
The Review Committee evaluates compliance and updates regularly the Code of Good Practices
